July 3, 2017 – By the end of Q2 of 2017, PACPI reported a total of 1,075,477 crabs released in various crab fishing areas of Visayan Sea since its operation of Negros Hatchery in April 2016 in partnership with the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental, lead by Gov. Alfredo Maranon, Jr.

In the production summary report released by PACPI last July 2, 2017, over 15 fishing villages in 8 towns of Negros Occidental have benefited from stock enhancement activities conducted since April 2016. The seed dispersals reached as far as Bantayan Island in northern Cebu and Sicogon Island in northern Iloilo. The Visayan Sea spans across three regions and four provinces namely Iloilo, Negros Occidental, Masbate, and Cebu.

The activities were conducted in collaboration with the barangay and local government units and participated by crab fishers all over the region. It provided venue for focus group discussions to effectively communicate with stakeholders on the importance of crab sustainability and compliance to existing laws that govern the BSC fishery.

The efforts of the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental are going ‘full force’ in the protection and management of the blue swimming crab and urged neighboring provinces to do the same.
